These were made for the Navy by Crosley for used as a “morale builder”, I guess for giving bored sailors something to do instead of going on liberty and getting in trouble and instead, staying on base and listening to the radio. This one is special to us being retired sailors and coming from Crosley’s home town of Cincinnati. 6-tubes, broadcast only, AC or DC. Connection for attaching a record player. The bold red warning plaque had nothing to do with radioactivity, it was thought that the local oscillator signal in the radio could be picked up by our enemies and give away a ships location, so these were not allowed on ships. When I opened it up to work on it, it looked like it was definitely built to last. After the chassis work I repainted it “battleship grey” replaced the dial glass and had new decals made for the controls. Jeff just picked another one of these up and being restored, glad we still have a set of decals left.

I left the back untouched, there was no way to reproduce all the lettering.

Notice the little anchor in the circle

Accepted by the Navy on 10-10-1945, The little anchor with “US” in the middle is a nice touch.
